Appropriate days to take stock. Twelve months that they have given to open new topics and insist on others. A time of resistance to the unappealable tide of social networks, which make any attempt to let things rest fleeting. A topic that I have not been able to avoid dealing with lately, almost like nostalgic sleeplessness from such a close past. A temptation I also fall intodispersing the information to others spaces, but with the conviction that the blog will always remain to be built slowly. 78 publications throughout the year, an exercise in resistance, almost all of which are organized in this year roundup post.
The research in this blog has been so extensive that it has navigated between two almost extreme shores: from the technological sophistication of the “topic of the year”, smart cities, to adaptive urbanism. The first topic has resulted in a complete series that, in such a short time, has become outdated but at least structured in a document:
- From the sustainable city to the smart city. Don’t lose perspective
- Smart City. Beyond smart energy management and digital technologies
- Smart city. Business commercial strategy and branding of new urban developments
- Smart City as mobilization of local technological capabilities and industrial opportunities
- Smart city. Political and social implications
- A compilation of resources on smart cities
- A collection of references on Smart Cities
- Smart City. Emerging technologies for urban functioning
From there, other notes arose for which a new report document is still pending. On this subject, things have evolved very quickly and since I started following it, some publications have appeared and, above all, some trends that I would like to systematize, which are almost noted in one of the posts to which I have dedicated the most time, The intelligence of the city is in the street:
- Ficciocities #11. Lavasa (India). There’s nothing smart about this
- Urban laboratories without people. From the German Quarter in Utah to the Smart City in New Mexico
- City intelligence is on the street
As I said, at the other extreme is the exploration of where the city is headed in these times of crisis. 2009 and 2010 were times when the diagnosis of the crisis and how it began to affect urban environments appeared recurrently on the blog (for the most assiduous, remember that insistence on following Plan E and the two local stimulus plans). From that we have moved on to a first stage of cataloging solutions for the new times of the urban agenda, under the title of adaptive urbanism, which I would like to continue to explore next year:
- Detroit, photographic attraction and urban policy laboratory
- Urban reconversion. From mall to university center
- Seeking an urban model for cities in transition
- Post-crisis adaptive urbanism. Urban gardens
- Post-crisis adaptive urbanism. Empty lots as urban solar farms
- Time for non-expansive urbanism
- Urban planning and mobility for an economy of crisis and a post-carbon world
- The story of the conversion of the New York High Line, now in book
- Sustainability in times of austerity
- Adaptive urbanism. It’s time for meanwhile
- Notes on adaptive urbanism for EQUIciuDAD 2011
A paragraph to rescue posts written with patience, trying to provide links and also own criteria on important issues but which, for one reason or another, I think have gone unnoticed. They are the forgotten posts that would deserve a reissue and that are also a reflection of other variants of the topics that will continue to occupy us:
- What content will the Urban Environment Quality and Sustainability Law have?
- We already have “Cities of Science and Innovation”. What now?
- Start-up of the INNPULSO network. Towards a technology-based urban economy
- Jan Gehl, the city of people. Janette Sadik-Khan, leadership to make it happen
- Apple’s new headquarters. You got caught, Steve
- Urban laboratories without people. From the German Quarter in Utah to the Smart City in New Mexico
- The silence of the media during infrastructure waste
- Even if climate change was a hoax
- New York bets on startups
There has also been a trace of some interventions in congresses and collaboration in books and publications:
- Cities, the hard core of sustainability in the future
- At BDigital Global Congress (Barcelona)
- Public Seminar on Urbanism and Sustainable Mobility (Málaga, September 22)
- Urban planning and mobility for an economy of crisis and a post-carbon world
- At the end of the month in Barcelona – Smart City Expo World Congress
- Urban recycling glossary – Ficciociudades
- Intervention in EQUIciuDAD 2011
- Notes on adaptive urbanism for EQUIciuDAD 2011
- Adaptive urbanism. It’s time for meanwhile
There has also been time to read books, that little hobby, and also to leave some notes about them:
- Global urban analysis. A survey of cities in globalization
- The principles of green urbanism. Transforming the city for sustainability
- Shaping urban infrastructures. Intermediaries and the governance of socio-technical networks
- Distributed urbanism. Cities after Google Earth
- Get out of the crisis. The Great Reset
- Death and life of big cities
- Emerald cities. Urban sustainability and economic development
- Sustainability in times of austerity
- The internet of energy and the Third Industrial Revolution
- Living in the endless city
And finally, the compilations that always work well:
- Visualization of urban data. London by taxi, bike and bus
- A collection of references on Smart Cities
- Urban projects that fell by the wayside
- History of urbanism. 6 videos
- Six books and little time to read
- 7,000 million people. Some world population graphs
- 10 examples of urban data visualization
So, taking stock, another year that the blog has been a good tool to keep in touch with those who are on the other side and to organize ideas. The two things are enough to keep writing. we read each other
