How to relocate an entire city

Kiruna, Sweden’s northernmost city, is set to sink in the next few decades, quite literally. The iron mines that run through its subsoil are to blame, which will cause most of the structures to collapse before 2050. That is why the decision was made to move an important part of the city and its 20,000 inhabitants to a new location. . The city center will be relocated three kilometers to the east, and many buildings will be demolished or moved. The relocation works began in 2014 following the project Kiruna 4-ever for which White Arkitekter AB won the award . A recent Swedish government documentary, shared by Gizmodo, shows how the occasion is being taken as an opportunity to achieve a better city, especially by the citizens (it seems the majority of them) who are forced to move:

A new, denser and more compact urban center has been proposed that “better responds” to the needs of citizens. Only three historic buildings will be moved, the material from the rest of the structures will be reused for new constructions. The owners of homes to be demolished have the option of being paid their market value with a 25% plus or being offered a similar home in the new city for free. Tenants will receive a subsidy to help them “transition.”
