Globalized trade, climate change, and the intensification of agriculture have exacerbated pests and diseases in food crops, causing great losses to small farmers. The PlantVillage Nuru app, developed by scientists at École Polytechnique Lausanne and Penn State University, helps growers diagnose pests: they only need to install the app on a smartphone, and the program is capable of detecting diseases based on its database, without the need to be connected to the Internet. This is one of the efforts aimed at giving small farmers access to technological solutions.
