INNOBASQUE, the Basque Agency for Innovation, has once again placed its trust in NAIDER to produce the advance estimation of R&D expenditure carried out by the Basque Science-Technology-Business System as a whole. In the current year, the estimate for 2025 has been updated, and the Advanced R&D Indicator for 2026 has been calculated.
The estimate is produced using an econometric calculation methodology that has been consolidated over the years, enabling the time lag in official statistics to be overcome and providing early information on R&D investment, thereby improving understanding of the Basque R&D landscape in each year. This advance information on investment commitments helps to refine management and to guide innovation policies at any given time.
Since 2017, the indicator has been calculated on an annual basis with a very high level of accuracy compared to the figures provided by official statistics. The model developed and updated by NAIDER also incorporates a qualitative component based on perception and analysis, drawing on the forecasts of the main R&D stakeholders in the Basque Country.
With this tool, the Basque Country strengthens its capacity for strategic planning and decision-making in the field of innovation, thanks to having an advance view of its R&D investment effort.
