The latest i<\/a>IPCC Report on Change\nClimate Change 2022 <\/a>leaves no room for\ndoubts: \u201cIt is unequivocal that human influence has warmed the atmosphere, the\nocean and land. There have been rapid and widespread changes in the\natmosphere, ocean, cryosphere, and biosphere. Ultimately, humans\nwe are responsible for a climate crisis that threatens our own well-being\nand the health of the planet. Only a forceful and hasty reduction of\ngreenhouse gases<\/strong> can prevent\nthe catastrophe. Therefore, the main objective must be zero emissions<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The construction sector that is responsible a\nEuropean level of 40% of energy consumption and 36% of carbon emissions\nCO<\/a>2<\/a><\/sub >\nderived from energy<\/a>, plays a\nimportant role in this long-awaited decarbonization. One of the strategies and\npractices that have evolved the most in recent years, is the\nadaptive reuse<\/strong>. In essence,\nIt is about reusing an existing structure or building, whatever its\nbeen, giving it a different use for which it was built or designed\noriginally, instead of building a new one. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When reusing and retrofitting an existing building,\nIn addition to saving material resources, the environmental footprint is reduced since\navoid further embedded carbon emissions, i.e. emissions from processes\nindustries that produced it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some of the advantages<\/strong> of adaptive reuse are:\n\n\u2022Preservation\nof heritage. <\/strong>They are buildings\nthat link us to our past and identity so they become\ncultural and architectural heritage\n\n\u2022Reduction of\nquantity and costs of construction materials. <\/strong>In the midst of a crisis\nof raw material supply, reducing the cost of materials results in\nessential for the stability of the sector.\n\n\u2022Promotion of\nsustainability<\/strong>. Demolish existing buildings for\nconstruction of new ones creates a lot of waste and perpetuates the linear model of\ncurrent construction.\n\n\u2022Urban regeneration<\/strong> <\/strong><\/strong>. <\/strong>Projects such as the High Line <\/a>in New York, a disused elevated railway line converted into a linear park with gardens, viewpoints, public cultural spaces and new commerce, demonstrate the capacity of urban revitalization of the community that these interventions have.\n\n\u2022Conservation of\nthe energy<\/strong>. The\nconstruction of new buildings has much more embodied energy than\nadaptive reuse.\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Success stories have multiplied exponentially\nthe last years. According to a 2017 Deloitte study, it is estimated that by 2030, 90% of the\nReal estate development will involve adaptive reuse. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
