{"id":20290,"date":"2010-05-04T10:11:25","date_gmt":"2010-05-04T08:11:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/naider.com\/naiderlab\/knowledge-in-the-new-economic-world-order\/"},"modified":"2010-05-04T10:11:25","modified_gmt":"2010-05-04T08:11:25","slug":"knowledge-in-the-new-economic-world-order","status":"publish","type":"naiderlab","link":"https:\/\/naider.com\/en\/naiderlab\/knowledge\/articles\/knowledge-in-the-new-economic-world-order\/","title":{"rendered":"Knowledge in the new economic world order"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/naider.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/PA2400281.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-5128\" alt=\"PA240028\" src=\"https:\/\/naider.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/PA2400281.jpg\" width=\"250\" height=\"188\" \/><\/a>The concept of economic globalisation has expanded and transformed.<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Phenomena such as outsourcing production are now just one of the multiple aspects within the framework of possibilities.<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>On the other hand, the rapid pace of technological change demands the constant updating of competitive skills in regions, countries and businesses.<\/strong><strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><strong>In this context,\u00a0<\/strong><strong>w<\/strong><strong>here can we now find competitive advantage that is durable and difficult to replicate?<\/strong><strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Undoubtedly one of the key advantages is knowledge, although it must be keenly protected.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Globalisation and technological change &#8211;<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>the keys to\u00a0<a>new economy<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The term\u00a0<em>globalisation\u00a0<\/em>implies numerous connotations. \u00a0Once it referred to the growing reality of a single global market.\u00a0 However, globalisation is currently a much wider phenomenon which is gradually transforming its consequences.<\/p>\n<p>In this way, economic globalisation not only demands the outsourcing of productive processes in the pursuit of more cost effective locations.\u00a0 Neither does it limit its impact to &#8220;glocalisation&#8221;, the attraction of the cheaper resources (human resources, etc.) to the countries of origin. \u00a0Globalisation means that the productive phenomena increasingly disseminates between developed countries and developing countries creating previously unimaginable flows.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Countries like India, China or Brazil are not only competing with more competitive resources but also on the basis of differential knowledge<\/strong>. \u00a0Firstly, their size allows them to generate a critical mass in the generation of science and technology. \u00a0This is already happening:\u00a0<strong>\u00a0the Biotechnology sector in India is growing at a rate of 30% while the R&#038;D expenditure in China has reached an annual level of 19%<\/strong>. \u00a0\u00a0In fact<strong>China has already become the second global force in R&#038;D behind the United States<\/strong>. \u00a0The process is clear &#8211; \u00a0whilst in 2005 non-OCDE countries represented 18.4% of global R&#038;D expenditure, this figure only amounted to 11.7% in 1996.<strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Secondly,\u00a0<strong>the weight of these countries as value generators in the process of innovation is increasing<\/strong>. \u00a0Emerging markets are now starting to become the main players in innovation. \u00a0Effectively, budding trends such as\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Reverse_innovation\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reverse innovation or trickle-up innovation<\/a>\u00a0refer to the process whereby innovation originally conceived in developing countries is transferred to developed markets. \u00a0This a growing trend mainly due to the huge existing potential for innovation in the vast lower market segment not currently served in these countries. \u00a0The second situation allows developing countries to<strong>attract significant R&#038;D investment from global businesses looking for products and services born, from the very process of innovation, in their final markets<\/strong>. \u00a0Long gone are the times when developed countries innovated and their outdated products were transferred to emerging countries.<\/p>\n<p>Simultaneously,\u00a0<strong>unprecedented frantic technological change<\/strong>\u00a0is taking place. \u00a0This factor further deepens the vulnerability of the developed economies and forces them to update their knowledge base rapidly. \u00a0New windows of opportunity are constantly appearing for new players both in the context of business and nations.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/naider.com\/sites\/default\/files\/27\/3160084151_4958e0b47f_0.jpg\" width=\"440\" height=\"293\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Knowledge as the main source of wealth<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In this rapidly changing scenario knowledge and in particular\u00a0<em>the capacity to generate new knowledge<\/em>\u00a0(and technology) and turn it into value for society has become the main competitive factor of any country. \u00a0In other words the capacity to innovate is becoming the main source of wealth. \u00a0Firstly, because in the global economy\u00a0<strong>knowledge is the least replicable and comparatively least mobile productive factor<\/strong>; as it principally relies on people and on education and research bodies. \u00a0And secondly, because rapid technological changes reduce the likelihood of generating value based on mature or obsolete technology, while\u00a0<strong>the economic opportunities offered by new knowledge and its transformation into innovation are increasing.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>From a business point of view, this means transforming the processes of creation and innovation and maximising the growing global dispersion of scientific-technological skills.\u00a0 In other words &#8211;\u00a0<strong>the business of the future must understand the world as a huge R&#038;D laboratory<\/strong>\u00a0where knowledge and technology can be drawn upon and transformed into value through innovation. \u00a0Therefore, the capacity to innovate will be the key competence of a business and it must be nurtured and kept &#8220;in house&#8221;. \u00a0The leading businesses of the future need to be global, open and strongly connected to the sources of knowledge &#8211;
