The Basque Government, through Ihobe, has launched a pioneering project to assess the vulnerability and risks of coastal and littoral habitats of community and regional interest in the Basque Country in the face of climate change, and to design an action plan to guide their future adaptation.
The initiative, carried out in collaboration with Azti, a leading centre in marine research, brings together a scientific and technical team specialised in biodiversity, marine dynamics, climate risks and adaptation measures. Its aim is to apply a proven methodology to rigorously analyse the potential impacts of climate change on these fragile ecosystems and to define prioritised and structured adaptation measures in a comprehensive action plan.
The project also adopts an integrated approach to climate action, considering both mitigation potential and the risks of maladaptation, as well as the synergies between the two perspectives, in line with the Basque Country’s strategic planning and climate legislation. In doing so, it strengthens the resilience of coastal and littoral environments, which are essential for biodiversity as well as for the social and economic well-being of the territory.
