Denmark, on the way to being organic infopost

Denmark wants to set an example as the most ambitious country in the world in the development of ecological and sustainable agriculture. In 2015, the Danish government adopted a 67-point plan to double the number of hectares dedicated to organic agriculture and serve more organic food in public institutions (including school canteens, hospitals or day centers) before 2020. The plan includes measures to support farmers who decide to start a transition towards the ecological, putting the public sector as an example through the use of the Government’s own lands. The plan also contemplates strengthening the ecological awareness of young people from schools.

There is a significant demand for organic products among Danish citizens, the national organic label has been in supermarkets for 25 years and is widely identified by consumers. So the increase in organic production also goes through the economic objective of depending less on exports. But the environmental reasons are also clear.

According to a United Nations report from 2013, betting on local organic farming is the only way to sustainably feed the world, that is, without causing irreparable damage to the quality of land, air and water. Avoid the use of toxic pesticides for the population and help preserve the biodiversity and fertility of the land.
