For every 100 euros received in state and economic transfers, public universities return 293 euros of GDP. This is one of the key data from the study on the economic contribution of Spanish public universities commissioned by the Ministry of Universities to the “Regional Quantitative Analysis” Research Group of the University of Barcelona, carried out with data for the year 2021.
The study measures the direct, indirect and induced economic impact of public universities on the Spanish economy. In addition to indicating in monetary terms the return to society of the public funds received by SUPE, the study calculates the contribution to employment, equivalent to 2.41% of the employed population, with 70% of the total impact concentrated in sectors other than education.
The executive summary of the study is available on the ministry’s website.
