At the September session of the Sustainability Commission of the Nerbioi-Ibaizabal Commonwealth, we presented to the nine municipalities the results of a pioneering project to foster the use of Nature-Based Solutions (NbS) across the territory. Over recent months, we have worked alongside local technical and political teams to build a shared map of opportunities, a prioritisation methodology, and a portfolio of concrete actions tailored to each municipal reality.

The process unfolded in six successive phases, ranging from the territorial and ecological diagnosis of the region to the final formulation of demonstrative projects. Using a multi-criteria analysis tool –designed to assess climate impact, technical feasibility, social benefits and cost– we supported the prioritisation of the most strategic interventions for each municipality.

Each municipality now has a set of action sheets proposing interventions such as the renaturalisation of urban spaces, the re-vegetation of degraded areas, the creation of green roofs and façades, the ecological restoration of riverbanks, or sustainable forest management. These proposals are aimed at improving climate resilience and the quality of life in neighbourhoods in a tangible way.

In addition, the project included specific training for municipal staff, a GIS viewer with detailed mapping of the natural environment, and ongoing support in decision-making. This combination of diagnosis, capacity-building and planning enables the Commonwealth to take a decisive step towards a climate-ambitious, cohesive, and nature-based regional strategy.

At Naider, we are proud to have supported this process, which reinforces the role of nature as a key ally in local climate action.
