The Vitoria-Gasteiz City Council has launched the Sustainability Observatory, an interactive platform allowing residents to consult and track indicators linked to the city’s major urban challenges and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Observatory is one of the central actions of the Office of the Future, the municipal initiative that integrates and coordinates the strategies of the city’s Urban Agenda 2030, and builds on the Urban Agenda 2030 Indicators Observatory developed in earlier phases.
NAIDER has provided technical assistance for the development and improvement of the Observatory. The work has included the updating and structuring of the indicators system, improvements to user experience, the incorporation of new functionalities for the monitoring and evaluation of urban policies, the strengthening of visualisation and information generation systems, and the integration of a bilingual gamified survey embedded directly in the platform, which invites residents to share their views on the city’s direction and generates a proprietary data source complementing institutional sources. This work continues NAIDER’s involvement in earlier phases of the project.
The initiative forms part of the national funding call for the promotion of the 2030 Agenda in local authorities, promoted by the Ministry of Social Rights, Consumer Affairs and the 2030 Agenda.
The Observatory allows users to visualise and update indicators across areas including environmental sustainability, social cohesion, mobility, housing, economic activity and energy transition. In doing so, it aims to strengthen the city’s monitoring and evaluation capacities, facilitate the periodic review of the Action Plan, and reinforce Vitoria-Gasteiz’s commitment to European, Spanish and Basque urban agendas, as well as to the SDGs and the European Missions.
