The implementation of circular business models plays a key role in the current business context, offering numerous benefits and opportunities. In response to this new paradigm, ISO has published three new international standards on the circular economy. These new standards, included in the ISO 59000 series of documents, aim to provide harmonised frameworks, requirements, guidance and support tools for integrating circular models into business operations.

The three approved ISO standards focus on the following:

  • ISO 59004 – Terminology, principles and implementation guidance. Defines what the circular economy is and shares the vision, principles and general guidelines on how to implement it and contribute to sustainable development.
  • ISO 59010 – Guidance on business models and value networks. This sets out a series of business-oriented guidelines to facilitate the implementation of the circular economy.
  • ISO 59020 – Measurement and evaluation of circularity. Provides a structured approach to measuring and assessing circularity and its impacts based on standardised indicators and complementary methods.

The CICLO: Circular Business Profile tool conceived and developed by NAIDER incorporates these approaches in its framework to accompany companies in the complex challenge of the transition to a circular business model.
