On 3 November, Markina-Xemein hosted the first working session for the drafting of the Lea-Artibai Energy Transition Plan, an initiative led by the Bizkaia Provincial Council and Lea Artibai Landa Garapena, with technical support from NAIDER. It is the first plan of its kind in Bizkaia’s rural districts.

The Plan focuses on the specific needs and opportunities of rural areas. Its aim is to identify viable energy transition measures in four areas: the primary and forestry sector, rural tourism, mobility, and municipal services and facilities.

The initiative forms part of the Lea-Artibai District Rural Development Programme and builds on projects and experiences already under way in the area.

During the session, representatives of the local councils and other organisations in the district reviewed the opportunities identified and began to set priorities for action. The process combines technical analysis with the participation of local stakeholders, through interviews and working sessions.

Over the coming months, the Plan’s objectives, lines of action and flagship projects will be defined, along with the role each stakeholder will play in putting it into practice.
