Innobasque, the Basque Innovation Agency, has launched a new exercise to estimate in advance R&D expenditure in the Basque Country, providing early information on investment made by the Basque Science-Technology-Business System. This edition updates the estimate for 2024 and calculates the advanced indicator for 2025.
The initiative addresses the need to overcome the time lag in official statistics, offering early data that provide a clearer picture of R&D activity in the Basque Country each year. These results contribute to refining management and guiding the country’s innovation policies, aligning them more closely with the real evolution of investment efforts.
Since 2017, the indicator has been calculated annually with a very high degree of accuracy compared to official statistics. The calculation is based on an econometric model developed and updated annually by Naider, which combines quantitative analysis with a qualitative assessment of the expectations and forecasts of the main R&D actors in the Basque Country.
This tool provides the Basque Country with an advanced insight into its R&D commitment, strengthening strategic planning capacity and decision-making in innovation policy.
